Artist Statement

I am a mother to my son, to my grandson, my stepdaughters and their families, my husband, at times, and now, my own mother. Motherhood and mothering will forever be a way of life. Ive’ become used to working in the cracks between the spaces and time and have come to prefer painting at night, when the world is my own and I can choose to believe that all those who are dear to me are safely tucked in bed. John Burroughs, the naturalist, and essayist wrote,” you must see the bird in your heart before you can find it in the branches”. In the literal darkness of my studio my heart is freed, and I can begin painting, careful not to be fooled by my eyes.

Artist Bio

Patrice Lorenz incorporates drawing, painting printmaking and other processes into her daily studio practice in both Brooklyn, NY and in New York State's Delaware County. Creating in collaboration with other artists has been a thread running through her career since the 1980's when Lorenz was the exhibition coordinator at ABC NO RIO and a member of COLAB (Collaborative Projects), both artist run organizations in NYC. During that time, she exhibited with Group Material at the New Museum, Fashion Moda in the Bronx, and numerous galleries in lower Manhattan. In 2005 Lorenz co-founded the Longyear Gallery, a co-operative gallery located in Margaretville, NY, and in 2017 she co-founded ADHOC Projects, an artist collective that curates thematic pop-up exhibits on line and in underutilized spaces. Her exhibition history reflects her longstanding affiliation with alternative, non-profit and artist run organizations.
