Artist statement

My recent fiber works explore prayer and storytelling with playful, free-style stitching on cloth surfaces. My repetitive layers of thread are akin to the swift, immediate application of a single painted brushstroke- though I make hundreds of stitches to develop this effect. My vibrant, meandering stitches represent the imperfect, vulnerable, and connected intentions of prayer. They are intentional improvisations. “Unutterable Intercessions” emerged in response to welcoming our 2nd set of twins (also, #5/ #6) and reveal adaptability in my artistic and prayerful practice during this phase of matrescence. I stitched during the random gaps of my day such as, during long prenatal doctor visits or while in the school pick up lane, fitting cloth covered cubes and embroidery supplies in my pocket, as one might do with prayer beads. The on-going practice of creating these cubes still serves to visually record my prayers and reminds me of what is possible.

Artist bio

Mia Eckes received her BFA from Minnesota State University-Mankato and her MA in Human Development from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. Mia is also a certified Kaizen- Muse Creativity Coach. She has exhibited her work locally. As an artist- mother to six, wildly creative children, Mia is a master of improvisation and reframing messes. She is acutely aware of the nuances that come with being a creative mom and recognizes the importance of acting on creative impulse and acknowledging small steps as great progress. Mia currently resides in Coon Rapids, MN where she shares creative studio space with her kids and supportive husband, Joe.
