Artist Statement

Conceptually, I am a feminist who finds unfading inspiration and humor in the complexity, beauty and danger of living in this body, at this time, in this space. That said, my work often includes fantastical elements and historical references. When I started teaching after having my son, I also started creating work that doubled as teaching demonstrations. I convinced myself that studio time was a luxury and that the only way I could indulge in that luxury, was if I could monetize it by turning it into teaching materials. In retrospect, this severely limited my practice. The realization that my studio practice is vital work, not luxury, has reinvigorated and expanded my practice.

Artist Bio

Kalleen Chilcote is an artist, printmaker and art educator living in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is a feminist who finds unfading inspiration in the complexity, beauty and danger of the natural world. She is also a mother of 2 and a former roller derby badass. Ms. Chilcote received her BFA in studio art from Tulane University in New Orleans and her MFA in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin. She concentrated on printmaking during both degree programs and has also studied internationally at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, England. Creatively, Ms. Chilcote’s focus shifts between endowing her papier-mâché creatures with mythic proportions, creating allegorical and often humorous prints and rendering dark, seductive waterscapes in charcoal and pastel.
