Artist statement

This series is part of a 100 day challenge. I paint every day. I paint on gessoed paper saving time and cost. Between 1 and 2 hours I paint a painting and then it’s done, moving onto the next painting tomorrow. I pick an object in my home to paint: toys, tools, saved objects... I always paint in my little basement studio to save set up time. I find time to paint whenever I can- while my supportive husband is cooking dinner and my kids are busy with their projects or watching tv. Sometimes I paint in spurts throughout the day while the kids are reading or playing with legos. On busy days I paint only after everyone is asleep. I have five kids. We unschool. Days are busy. Unschooling by nature is about pursuing your passions. I’m trying to demonstrate this with my 100 days of painting challenge.

Artist bio

Julee Hightower Ryle was born in Wenatchee Washington in 1980. She always loved to make art, especially paintings. Julee studied fine arts at Pratt Institute, focusing on painting and sculpture. After her BFA Julee worked in NYC as a mold maker in several art foundries, a studio assistant for a major NY artist and on the side learned metal smithing. After her first baby Julee started sewing quilts. During all this she took a long break from painting. Julee is now a wife and the mother of 5 children ages 3 - 11. She’s slowly getting back to her first artistic love- painting! She currently lives in Walla Walla, Washington with her family and is keeping busy unschooling her children, sewing and painting scenes of mom life.
