Artist Statement

After painting color-focused abstracts for many years alongside my commercial creative career, becoming a mother dramatically changed my studio practice. The embodied experience of pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding drew me out of the abstract and into reality. My work became representational, and, deepened by the experience of the pandemic, depicts daily domesticity: a sink full of dishes, shaving my legs in the shower, reading a book. Forever a believer in the romance of the mundane, these scenes have a quiet sense of humor, brought out by chunky stylization and vivid color.

Artist Bio

Born in South Carolina and raised in South East Asia, Angela Witmore currently lives and works in New York's Hudson Valley. After graduating with a degree in Studio Art, Witmore spent the next 5 years working as an Art Director and Graphic Designer in NY and LA, while maintaining a rigorous studio practice in her free time. During the pandemic, Witmore and her family relocated to the woods of upstate NY, where her painting practice has developed anew.
