Artist statement

This small hand-embroidered room portrait is one of a series of works capturing gratitude for a special place - my apartment. They reference drawings made during long pandemic evenings, leaning into appreciation to avoid climbing the walls. Simple color schemes and linework connect the images to each room’s spirit and document the tenderness of the space. This home was my post-divorce refuge and the first place purely my own. In it I rekindled my creative spirit, found my feet as a parent, nurtured new love. Its 1000 square feet also served as schoolhouse, conference center, playground, dining hall throughout the pandemic. And it was our shelter during the Minneapolis uprisings, when military convoys rattled the windows through the night. By slowly recreating the space in cloth and thread, I deepened my relationship to it and the personal blossoming that grew from it.

Artist bio

Alexandra Beaumont is a textile artist and dancer. She was born and raised in South Carolina to a Jamaican father and American mother, both working musicians. She attended the residential South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities throughout high school, focusing on dance and visual arts, and went on to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY where she studied fashion design. After working in New York City as a menswear designer, she returned to a fine arts practice, incorporating her love for fabrics and hand sewing. She now lives in Minneapolis, MN, where she makes work centering themes of personal reconstruction, community, and celebratory display.
