Artist statement

I make text-based paintings that are at turns sardonic, poetic, self-deprecating, and revealing. Drawing on reserves of personal narrative, political observation, and creative allowance, I begin each piece with text that has been distilled from volumes of free-form writing. Once I am satisfied with the phrasing of the piece, I then use the Reed-Kellogg method of sentence diagramming to further edit and disassemble the text. For me, sentence diagramming is the act of critical examination and understanding. In a sentence diagram, every word, from the most innocuous article to the most grandiose verb, serves a purpose and is essential to our system of communication and understanding. The sentence diagram serves to democratize the content of the text. Like the goal of all good literature, I strive to make nuanced work that is, at its core, an examination of the oddities and intricacies of the human condition.

Artist bio

Her first solo show in New York City was held at Mike Weiss Gallery in September 2012 and was followed by residency appointments at the Hambidge Center, Fountainhead Residency, VCCA, the Wassaic Project, and ArtGarda in Sirmione, Italy. Gingrow has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally and has received critical reviews from publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Modern Painters, and Frieze Magazine.
