$4,500.00

2023
Cotton yarn, rope, natural dye, walnut hooks

ARTIST STATEMENT
With natural dye and fiber I engage practices spanning generations, infusing each piecewith narrative depth. My work aims to create projective landscapes tethered to the past. I callthese works temporal landscapes. For instance, I bundle fibers into recognizable yarn-doll figures and then weave them into tapestries rich in textures and colors. In doing so, I cultivate a process of iteration, clustering, and layering. This blurs the forms into abstraction and evokes friction between continuity and change. Incorporating materials linked to specific places and times acknowledges the shaping of my world by these histories. This approach encourages a dialogue between materials, colors, and cultures that transcends conventional boundaries. I strive to honor the foundational techniques of my craft while exploring new horizons, intending to provoke thought, spark conversation, and inspire a deeper appreciation for our interconnectedness.

ARTIST BIO
Jo Lobdell (b. 1986) is a visual artist, creating textiles, installations, and sculpture. Raised in New England in a multigenerational home, Lobdell’s practice is caught up in those familial connections through the inheritance of objects, skills, and ideas. She transforms these acquisitions into new forms, imbuing them with elements of playfulness, optimism, and loss.

Currently working in fiber, wood, and dye, she is exploring themes around caretaking and the movement of time. Lobdell holds an MFA in. sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art, a BFA in visual art from Lesley University, and an AAS in graphic design from Parsons School for Design. She resides and works in Boston, MA and collaborates as a creative partner at the interdisciplinary studio Matter Design.
