Virginia Broersma "Lean"

$0.00
NFS

acrylic and colored pencil on paper/ 15 x 19 inches/ 2020/ $800

Artist Statement

I make paintings that focus on bodies at leisure, specifically lounging in and around pools as a way to highlight our deep need for space and time for that perfect combination of rest and pleasure. The forms are draping, dangling and sprawling in and around each other within intimate spaces often protected by large leafy plants delineating a boundary between public and private. This work engages with the legacy of figurative painting both to critique it and find a way to contribute to it as a woman in the twenty-first century. Exposure of the body is a constant consideration in my figurative paintings: which parts of the body I show, and the degree of legibility in each work in order to disrupt objectification. I have come to learn that the body is never neutral, and I feel a great sense of responsibility in how I choose to portray it.
