Padyn Humble "Finding Balance Between the Hard and Soft"

$0.00
NFS

foam, spackle, wood glue, flour, acrylic paint, spray paint, polyurethane, pump dispenser, lavender lotion/ 9x10x12”/ 2020. $550

Artist Statement

The moments in which we find solitude or care are often wedged between many other contradictions. Finding balance between the hard and soft highlights the absurdity of our imbalanced work/life routines and offers a moment of unexpected relief. A rock is commonly a metaphor for obstacles, but a rock can also be a support - a seat, a hot rock massage, a meditative object. The manual functionality and intimacy of scale insinuates that the labor required for care and rest is always our own and not without sacrifice. It's important to note that in this wellness/self-care culture we’ve created, getting the time or health we deserve is not intrinsically part of our social culture but must be created by ourselves. The opacity of the vessel allows the subjectivity of not knowing what will be dispensed, which can feel uncanny or suspicious, but will hopefully provide relief.

Artist Bio

Padyn Humble is an artist and curator from Missoula, Montana. His practice addresses issues of masculinity, sexuality, intimacy, and privilege to see how the social norms that endorse those systems intersect with or influence identity. Through combination, exaggeration, and abstraction he reinterprets the intention of our social and cultural objects to construct meaning through a queer perspective. Humble has been an active artist since 2014. He has held over eleven solo shows, cofounded a collective, and curated eight large exhibitions. He received his BFA in painting from the University of Montana. In 2019, he was an artist in residence at Bunker Projects in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a resident at The Chautauqua School of Art 2020, and will participate in the Picture Berlin residency September 2021. He is currently finishing his Sculpture MFA at Southern Illinois University.
