Christina Massey "Artisanal 23"

$0.00
NFS

Acrylic and Enamel paint on image transfer monoprint, paper, repurposed aluminum cans, wire and mesh/ 24" H x 19" W x 7" D/2018/ $2100

Artist Statement

In the series “Artisanal” - titled after the phrase used to distinguish consumer products by smaller brands from their large corporate competitors, aluminum from craft beer cans is used in combination with papers, fabrics wire and paint to create colorful abstractions from Nature. I am very interested in this relationship and distinction between hobby, professionalism, masculine and feminine, playing between painting and sculpture, fine art and craft. The craft beer industry is largely associated with male leisure activity of which is using the language of “craft” to distinguish and elevate it’s product rather than to devalue. The works incorporate elements of hand stitching, weaving, painting, collage, and created while at an “artists retreat” - a space that has been dedicated for artists to rejuvenate, rest, create, think, follow their intuition as to what they needed, be that anything from leisurely gardening to creating in the studio. No creative output was expected, although this laid-back space prompted one of the most productive in my career.

Artist Bio

Christina Massey’s work has been exhibited heavily in the greater NYC metropolitan area and won her several awards such as the FST StudioProject Fund Grant, Brooklyn Arts Fund Grant, SIP Fellowship at the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, Puffin Foundation Grant and Mayer Foundation Grant. Massey’s work has been featured in Hyperallergic, Art Spiel and Art Fuse and is in the collections of the Janet Turner Print Museum, Art Bank Collection in DC, Credit Suisse and multiple private collections. Massey currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Massey is the creator and curator of the WoArtBlog highlighting the work of contemporary female identifying artists. She founded the USPS Art Project, a mail art collaboration initiative created in April of 2020 that has resulted in hundreds of artists participating and became a traveling/thematic exhibition showing in six states. The project was featured on ARTnet News, Visionary Projects, ABC News and more.
