Artist Statement

As a working artist, my studio practice investigates visual literacy and semiotics—specifically how we think about, see, read, and remember the world around us. I believe Art is a call and response between viewer and image rather than a depiction of a rigid thought or concept. I have come to appreciate the power of abstraction, especially when juxtaposed with our current oversaturated age of information. Using simple geometry and the psychology of color, I build ambiguous environments that align neural pathways, allowing for non-linear self-exploration through memory and imagination. I welcome the referential properties of abstraction, helping create a more harmonious relationship between the artwork and the viewer’s past experiences. Utilizing various tools and strategies, I hope to promote curiosity, self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-love, revealing shared experiences and inspiring collective community empathy and support that transcends social constructs of age, gender, and race.

Artist Bio

Chad Kouri is a Chicago-based working artist known for his intuitive, vibrant compositions that utilize the holistic properties of color and abstraction. His mixed-race ancestry is mirrored by his multidisciplinary studio practice, focusing broadly on visual art, music, and design while considering theories based in minimalism, color theory, semiotics, improvisation, and radical joy. Utilizing a wide range of skillsets and strategies, Kouri reminds us to stay curious and make time for play, rest, and introspection, enabling us more bandwidth for mutual aid and collective community care. His works are held in public and private collections in the Americas and numerous European and Arab nations.
