BIO

Emmaline’s work examines how capitalism and colonialism impact our ecosystems. She is a member of the experimental collaborative project ECO AGE, which merges art, sound, and performance. Emmaline has collaborated with artists Kelsey Lu, Tara Jo Tashna, Aarron Ricks, and her partner Paulapart. Emmaline’s work has been shown at Sunday Sessions at MoMA PS1, SVA, EFA Project Space, NARS Foundation and Trestle Projects. She attended artist residencies at Mary Sky, Hancock, VT; Norte Maar, Jay, NY; Public Works on Governor’s Island, NY and Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT. She received her BA studying Environmental Anthropology from Union College in 2009. In 2010, she studied with RISD and Brown University in France and then attended SAIC for postgraduate studies. Her work has been published in The Washington Post, Sorry Archive’s The Air Sheets, and Ginger.

STATEMENT

Emmaline Payette is a multi-disciplinary artist living in Brooklyn, NY. Her artwork focuses on the interconnections of ecology and culture. She creates art objects, installations, and projects that engage with the landscape of the Anthropocene and envision a future Ecological Age. While her work spans a variety of media, it deeply embraces the principles of intersectional ecofeminism. Emmaline’s practice focuses on the concepts of ecological reciprocity, the stewardship of land and water, and mutual caregiving through multi-species relationships. Her work often involves intercepting post-consumer materials before they go to waste, transforming them into ecologically informed art objects, like rock or coral sculptures. Her installations form interactive ecosystems for artists to inhabit; creating a platform for her collaborators to showcase their work.
