BIO

Emma Rossoff (b. 1992, New York, New York) lives and works in Austin, Texas. Rossoff received a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Columbia University in 2016 and her MFA in Sculpture & Extended Media at University of Texas, Austin in 2022. Before attending Columbia she completed her foundation year at the Rhode Island School of Design and studied Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins in London. She has studied furniture making at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine and woodcarving and etching at the Art Students League in New York. She attended a residency at Vermont Studio Center in 2019, and has been included in group exhibitions in New York City, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, PA, and Austin, TX.

STATEMENT

Emma Rossoff’s work is an attempt to reconcile two incompatible American dreams: to establish a place in the world through the ownership of a home; and to hit the open road, free from the ties of belonging. Dancing on the threshold, she builds sculptures which are reimagine interiors suffused with a sense of wandering. Discarded possessions adopt new, absurd functions in her work, acknowledging the limits of utility and progress. Meanwhile, she employs a range of traditional craft techniques to provide a feeling of self-sufficiency and sway over a wobbling world.
