BIO

Linda Vigdor lives and works in New York City. She has had solo exhibitions with Chashama and at Tribeca Labs; her work has been exhibited in group shows with Plaxall Gallery (LIC), Truro Center for the Arts / Yellow Chair, Gallery 118, Ethan Cohen Kube, Deanna Evans Projects flat file, New Society Art Gallery, Schema Projects, SVA Gallery, and others. Her relatively recent PhD in education and feminist technology studies in part frames how she draws on science and feminist technoscience to create paintings that consider humanity’s role and responsibility to Earth. Linda has received grants from the Chashama Foundation and PSC CUNY. She holds an MFA in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in NYC, a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an MFA in Costume Design from Boston University.

STATEMENT

I depict seemingly improbable encounters between species that are in fact most probable (in an existential sense). While embracing a holistic ecological understanding of life on Earth I ruminate on a rising ecological dystopia brought about by us humans, self-described as the most intelligent beings on Earth (and according to some, in the universe). Mixing elements of surrealism, representation, and abstraction, my work is inspired by both art and techno-science – both beautiful and neither, benign. I zoom in on the sites of intelligence or consciousness of a species (each an aspect of the Earth’s): for the octopus, it’s the arms and suckers; for trees, it is likely their root systems; for fungi, it’s the mycorrhizal networks; and for humans, it’s largely the brain/neurons.
