BIO

Christian Wechgelaer is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Halfmoon NY. In 2021, he received his BFA in Printmaking and Photography from The College of Saint Rose. Christian has already been included in numerous group exhibitions including "More Than a Sketchbook" at the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Troy, NY; "The Big Take" at Collar Works, Troy, NY, and "Dan Greenfeld, Corran Shrimpton, Charlotte Moody, and Christian Wechgelaer" at Saratoga Arts, Saratoga Springs, NY. In 2023, Christian will be included in a group exhibition at Albany Center Gallery.

STATEMENT

Spurred by the displacement that accompanies nostalgia, I use printmaking, drawing and collage to create stable representations of memory images. My work examines the relationship between these memory images and imagination, and how they are affected by the visual information we intake throughout our lives. I question how parts of our visual culture/history become part of our subconscious, while constantly chasing the nostalgic spark that is at their core. Along the way, images become blurred and rearranged, and I begin telling new stories with these fragments. What results are paper reminders, temporary altars to fleeting spirits.
