BIO

Ben Pinder is an interdisciplinary artist who creates a surreal visual mythology and cosmology that subverts traditional American masculinity. Pinder’s imagery draws from early woodcuts, medieval iconography and children’s drawings to create a playful, funny and yet sharp critique of traditional hyper-masculinity. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Ben was raised in Vermont, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania and is currently in New York. Among other venues Ben’s work has been exhibited at Brooklyn Arts Council, the Icebox Project Space in Philadelphia, Smack Mellon, Wassaic Projects, and The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art. He received his Masters in Fine Art from Pratt Institute and now lives in the Hudson Valley.

STATEMENT

Through a multidisciplinary practice of videos, drawings, paintings, sculptures, textiles, and performance is a surrealist cosmology imagining a rebirth of masculinity and male-coded activities, clothing, and behavior. Discarding the contemporary male identity, my work subverts traditional masculinity, filters out toxic elements, and ultimately leaves subjects uninhibited and in states of becoming in cosmic and ambiguous spaces. In videos, vividly colored shapes undulate and shift from landscapes to fabric prints to anonymous patterned men in reflective masks dancing in reverie to original musical compositions. In paintings and drawings, I create amalgamations of earth-bound marvels and galactic wonders. I’ve recently understood my childhood fascination with space to be a hope for an optimistic future of limitless possibilities and endless imagination, where technology is used solely for good, and humanity sets aside differences to explore the Universe. As a parent to young children, I constantly worry about the future world they will inherit. I want that world to be beautiful, safe, and full of wonder, love and acceptance. The colorful portrayal of clouds, trees, and figures set amongst a fantastic field of stars elevates our broken world to a bright, ideal future.
