Artist Statement

My work is invested with a deliberate consideration of the elements of painting and its history – from the physical properties and process; to the rich lineage of abstraction; to extending its contemporary relevance. Rooted in everyday observation and experience, the paintings record as they reinvent particular time(s) and space(s). Elements of incongruity and resolution, fracture and fusion, and the variable rhythm of daily life are reflected. It is any one of a number of visual cues that can instigate a painting, from a passing cloud to a candy wrapper, but ultimately my process yields to the liberty of the materials and the singular necessity of each piece.

Artist Bio

Cathleen Daley is an artist, writer, curator and co-founder of Room 83 Spring, an artist-run project space in Watertown, MA (2014 – 2021). Ms. Daley holds an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a BFA from SMFA/Tufts. Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, she immersed herself in early formative contrasts, from the superb collection of the Albright Knox Art Gallery … to boundary-blurring Hallwalls Contemporary Arts … to the personal workshops, sewing rooms and kitchens of family and friends. Daley’s own studio practice and curatorial impulse embrace such a spectrum of expression and commitment to inclusive exchange. Represented by Provincetown’s Alden Gallery, Daley’s paintings and installations have been presented in numerous museums, universities, and galleries, including OK Harris, NY; New Britain Museum of American Art; Fitchburg, Provincetown and Nassau County Art Museums. Reviews of her work have been published in the Boston Globe, Art New England and artscope.
