Drawer 3- Weird Garden, Colored Pencil on Paper, 8 x 7 inches, 2020

Artist Statement

These recent works are a product of moving back Upstate since the pandemic broke in New York City. I’m not sure where these drawings and similar paintings are taking me. They are freer, stranger and more colorful than my other work and feel like internal structures, as reproductive and sexual shapes have been emerging. For these reasons they feel more honest and alive.

In drawings and paintings saturated with color, sacred geometry and sensual forms, I explore how light and space can record encounters with nature. Beginning with gestural, ‘automatic’ underpainting, surfaces are built by emphasizing cosmic, microscopic and terrestrial shapes. Growing up in Upstate New York has been the richest source of inspiration. Here, I've studied native plants and trees, meditating on a life force beyond what is nakedly visible, hoping that it will be organically transmitted into the work.
