Artist Statement

In my works, I contemplate on feelings of belonging and adaptability in indoor and outdoor spaces. I am inspired by the organic gestural formations in nature, as well as the structural certainties in built environments. My works are grouped into series based on the techniques I use to start the process, as well as on their thematic focus. In this ongoing series of drawings titled Residue (reminiscent of the sediments left on the bottom for cup-reading after Turkish coffee) I begin by pressing the sediments left at the bottom of the vat onto paper after a marbling process from a different series of work. I then gather images from my archive, including some of their components in this new incarnation. I weave the markings together using various media including ink pen, graphite, gouache, colored pencil and spray paint. I let the materials merge spontaneously until the composition is intuitively balanced.
