Tyna Ontko 'Star Series 17'

$0.00
NFS

Drawer 4- Star Series 17, Ink on paper, 9" x 12", 2019

Artist Statement

Tyna Ontko's practice combines a series of processes which expand upon the definitions of autobiography, ecology and economy. By traditional means of labor and craft, she uses natural materials to render art objects through an ecofeminist lens in an attempt to convey a sense of how the body shapes the built environment and the notions of worth within it. These processes are informed by intensive research, spiritual practice, domestic labor, and queer perspective, experiences which in turn form a blueprint for the work based in both circumstance and intent. Ultimately interested in how we use ritual to contribute to a greater dialogue of signs and symbols, Ontko’s practice embraces the potential of everyday magic to reshape narrative purpose and shift perception over time.

Artist Bio

Tyna Ontko is an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture and installation. She received her BFA from Western Washington University with a focus in print media/installation and art history. Ontko has attended residencies at Black Church Print Studio in Dublin, Ireland, Residency 108 in Tivoli, New York, and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont among others. She has exhibited nationally and internationally with exhibitions including those at the San Francisco Art Institute, Gallery 4Culture, Seacourt Art Center, and the Tacoma Art Museum. She has been the recipient of regional and national funding including a GAP Grant through Artist Trust, and the Undergraduate Fellowship through the Southern Graphics Council International. She currently resides in Seattle, WA, where in addition to her own practice, she is a member and curator with local contemporary art space, SOIL Gallery.
