Maya Ciarrocchi 'I Dream You'

$300.00
NFS

Drawer 1- I Dream You, 2020, Monotype, Ink on Paper, 16 x 12 inches

Artist Statement

I am an interdisciplinary artist working in a number of modalities including drawing, printmaking, video, performance and social practice. In these projects I use storytelling and embodied mapmaking to excavate vanished histories. These themes are rooted in queerness and in the experience of my Ashkenazi ancestry, the site of ancient, inherited wounds. In my prints and videos, I layer architectural renderings of demolished buildings, maps of disappeared places, and images obtained from historical Yizkor books. The resulting compositions construct new, fantastical spaces that offer possibilities for healing and remembrance. My performance projects are often created collaboratively with audiences and performers, as in Site: Yizkor; a performance and workshop that documents the physical and emotional manifestation of death and loss through music, video and viewer contributed writing.

Ciarrocchi received a Film/Video Grant from the Jerome Foundation and grants from the MAP Fund, the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, and the Franklin Furnace Fund. In addition to her individual studio practice, Ciarrocchi is a TONY, Bessie and Jeff Award winning projection designer for dance and theater.
