Julie Pereira 'Hey'

$0.00
NFS

Drawer 4- "Hey", piled circular stickers blue-washed bristol board, 6" x 6", 2020, $250

Artist Statement

Closing one’s eyelids after glancing at the sun’s reflection dancing on the water, a variety of overlapping colorful spots appear. Similar patterns generate from pressing on closed eyelids as the optic nerve is stimulated. In an additive process, I pile circular stickers to generate optical figures and patterns. One sticker connects to another, building steps in time. When two stickers build off of one, a forking path occurs, like two different choices. Through improvisational piling I ask, what can the parts become? Daily I practice forming new aggregates with these same pieces, ever surprised by the array of different results- nearing infinity. While these piled stickers parts are flat and static, when they are composed onto the picture space, they begin optically to appear to move and dance, like a regenerative life force. The work is an engagement with the mystery of being.

Artist Bio

Julie Pereira has exhibited for over 15 years, in New England, South Korea, Belgium and Japan. She completed her BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005. Following that she lived in Japan from 2006-2014 as a Monbukagakusho Scholar, receiving her MFA in 2010 and PhD in Fine Arts in 2013. After completing her PhD, she was invited to work with curator Hironori Yasukochi in a three year emerging artist initiative that supported three group shows over the course of that time. Pereira currently lives and works in New Hampshire.
