Gala Cude-Pacheco 'Rhinestone Sword Lily'

$0.00
NFS

Drawer 1- Rhinestone Sword Lily, 2020. Chromogenic Print, edition of 10. 16 in. x 9 in

Artist Statement

This series of photographs uses familiar plant life and store-bought embellishments to examine the parameters of the natural world and our expectations of its physicality. These works explore the literal and symbolic relationships we form with biological materials, synthesizing popular decorative conventions, the psychology of plant care, and connotations of adornment. Employing digital photography as an intermediary recalls the identity-forming qualities of self-representation while also alluding to the use of possession, consumption, and ornamentation to form a sense of self.

Artist Bio

Gala Cude-Pacheco is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice includes drawing, painting, mixed media, assemblage, photography, and video. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee and currently lives and works Washington, DC. She is interested in materiality, value creation, record making, identity forming behaviors, and social stratification. Her work often employs materials from or representations of the “natural world,” ranging from potted plants and wildflowers to floral patterned bedding and artificial foliage. Cude-Pacheco’s interdisciplinary approach to art-making reflects the multisectoral trajectory of her artistic, academic, and professional pursuits. Gala received her bachelor’s degree from Agnes Scott College (Decatur, Georgia), where she studied Art and Art History, Gender Studies, and Media Studies. She completed a Master of Arts Management at American University (Washington, DC) where she studied the functional structures that connect people to art.
