Stina Puotinen, "Melon Bra"

$0.00
NFS

found object assemblage

2.5’ x 5’

2021

STATEMENT

Melon Bra (2021) is part of a larger series of work exploring the connection between leisure and labor, combining found objects and functional materials to highlight the invisible labor in perceived light heartedness. The materials present over the top visual puns to poke fun at the absurdity of modern standards of physical beauty, and reclaim often pejorative terms about body image.

BIO

Stina Puotinen is an artist, educator and occasional curator from New York City. Earning her BFA at Vassar College in 2004 in Studio Art and Art History, she went on to teach at major arts institutions including MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim, among many others. She lived in Manchester, UK while earning an MFA in Collaborative Practice from Manchester School of Art 2015 - 2017, and has since returned from her studies to live and work in Brooklyn.

Her work explores the (mis)interpretation of objects, questions of communication & relationships, spontaneous collaboration and the creation of social space through sculpture, installation and sometimes performance. Object based performances and collaborative projects have tackled ideas about work, play, and the semantic divide between the two. Her installation work and its photographic documentation allude to art historical references, examining the coded language of objects, images and color through visual and verbal double entendres. Much of the work is inherently and intentionally humorous; Puotinen takes being silly very seriously and attempts to inject humor and humanism into visual art experiences.
