Artist/Mother Podcast and Collar Works are excited to present the third annual Painting at Night exhibition, juried this year by Judith Braun, an artist, mother, and grandmother. The Artist/Mother Podcast, founded by Kaylan Buteyn in 2018, has created a vibrant community offering exposure and opportunity to artists who are also mothers. The exhibition’s title originated in reaction to a New York Times article stating, “You can’t paint at night in your kitchen and hope to be a good artist.”

Juror Judith Braun replies: “The Artist/Mother Podcast community is here to poke a hole in that mythical, stupid statement. Not only has the Covid 19 pandemic proven that all serious artists will work wherever they can, but great art has always come from difficult circumstances. The authenticity and soul of any endeavor is born out of the drive and desire to express oneself against all odds. I don’t for one minute believe that kids and kitchen tables are hurdles artists who are mothers cannot jump. Mothers have their hands and hearts and heads full, but they are the pioneers of making it work.”

This show is a selection of the outstanding submissions that prove that point. There were themes that coalesced, like humor, talisman, domesticity, materials, systems, and self-awareness, to name a few. Still, a sense of resilience, transcendence, and a moment of arrival carried the work over the finish line.

Meet Painting At Night artists and mingle with our Collar Works and Artist/Mother communities at a celebratory Artist Reception on Saturday, June 25 from 5-7PM. Enjoy light nosh provided by our friends Mel + Gio from D&L Catering, Local Beer + Wine by Rare Form Brewing Company, and Capital Wine & Spirits.

About Judith Braun (she/her), Juror
"Born in Albany, New York, in 1947, I left for New York City in 1965 to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology. Majoring in Fashion Illustration I learned the discipline of figure drawing but never took to a career in commercial art. Instead, I got an apartment in the East Village and lived the hippie life of the Sixties. After fun communes turned to frightening cults and domestic violence, I somehow, as a single mom, found my way back to school to earn an MFA from the University at Albany in 1983. Several years later I returned to New York and set up a live/work studio on the Lower East Side and became part of a community of artists spanning the boroughs of the city. I remained there until 2018 when I returned to my hometown of Albany to live near my grandchildren. Here, my entire house has become my studio, and I've discovered the vibrant Hudson Valley art scene.

"My career spanned a range of work, from realistic paintings of angels to wall-sized photocopies of genitals, from pristine symmetrical drawings to charcoal fingerprint murals. There have also been forays into wood construction and video as I carry "the personal as political” torch. I have had name changes along the way too, from my early married name, Weinman, converted to Weinperson for several years, and now back to my birth surname, Braun. It's all part of a search for selfhood, expressed by my 2016 show titles, Homeostasis and Crazy Bitch. Recent exhibitions include My Pleasure, at Opalka Gallery, Russel Sage College, in Albany, NY, and Eleven Women of Spirit at Zürcher Gallery, in NYC currently on view."

About Artist/Mother Podcast
What started as a podcast has morphed into a big, bold, beautiful community. In December 2018, Kaylan started recording episodes from her living room…reaching out to the small circle of artists who were mothers that she knew and asking to hear more about their stories. Episodes were released beginning in February of 2019 and within a few weeks artist/mothers from all over started reaching out and connecting. The rest, as they say, is sort of history… a retreat happened, a Crit group was formed and we have grown our community and tweaked our offerings and hope to continue to do this work for many many years to come. As long as there will be people making art there will be mothers making art and we hope there is always a space to uplift and support their art practices and well-being. While our community is rooted in the artist/mother identity, we want to support any female-identifying artist in the world…artists of all backgrounds, mediums, and education levels. We don’t believe you have to be a mother, to be a mother-er and we believe every artist in every phase of their career needs community and has something of value. We welcome trans and cis women as well as genderqueer, and non-binary people. Black Lives Matter in this community and we hope our podcast and programming always represent the underrepresented in our society and provide all of us a place to gather, grow, and share our stories and art practices.
